In this guide we will cover how to setup DLR(E911) for a domain. The EasyITGuys VoIP system has the ability to map multiple addresses and getting started is very easy! The requirements are as simple as providing an address and a phone number for your address. We have customers with 3 or more locations configured in their accounts. This article explains the process of creating 1 emergency endpoint, however, multiple can easily be created.
The E911feature is not only smart to implement, but may be a legal requirement as well. In the United States, Kari’s Law and the RAY BAUM’S Act require that E911 information is provided. For more information, see the FCC definition of E911 (https://www.fcc.gov/general/9-1-1-and-e9-1-1-services).
Until further notice, you will need to setup both DLR(E911) and Legacy911 if you require using Legacy911.
LEGACY IS STILL REQUIRED FOR SIP TRUNKS
E911 additional features:
- Set Granular Location: Location data can be defined by domain site, and own to the individual device level, and can be as granular as “the last cubicle at the end of the hall”.
- Set Multiple Notifications: Notifications that a 911 call has been made can now be sent to the local organization via an automated phone call, an email, or via a SIP message that appears on the screens of supported phones.
- New Location Detection: When an IP address change is detected in the portal or on mobile web, the user will be prompted to update their current location, so that the data is kept up to date.
Define Emergency 911 (e911) Endpoints #
Endpoints provide anEndpoint ID(also known ascall back number), which is the unique identifier a carrier needs to route emergency calls. When user e911 address are added, the Endpoint ID is referenced in the Emergency Caller ID field.
Add an Endpoint #
New endpoints are added to the portal through the Emergency Endpoint section in Inventory. The billing address will be verified and both the endpoint ID (which will be the caller ID) and the billing address will be sent to the configured 3rd party carrier.
- Open the Portal.
- Navigate to Inventory Emergency Endpoints
- Click the Add Endpoint button. This will bring up the Add endpoint
Complete the Endpoint
- Add the Call Back Number, this will act as the Endpoint ID and will need to be the emergency caller ID for the users/devices that are to use this >endpoint.
- Enter a new address meant for billing purposes, or select an existing address.
- If entering a new address, click the Validate button. The address must be validated before saving.
Set the Emergency Caller ID for All Users to a Newly Created Endpoint #
Once you’ve created an Endpoint, you will need to apply the Emergency Caller ID to all users so the system can use this unique identifier to send SIP Invites to the proper endpoint. This can be done by hand (see section below), but the best practice is to use the provided tool to set the newly created endpoint to all users at the same time>
To set the Emergency Caller ID to all users in a domain
- Navigate to Inventory Emergency Endpoints and find the endpoint you would like to apply to the domain’s users.
- Click the Apply Endpoint button to the right of the selected Endpoint
- After confirmation, this modifies all users in that domain, setting their emergency caller ID to user that endpoint
Set the Emergency Caller ID for Individual Users or Devices to a Newly Created Endpoint #
This provides a way to optionally update the Emergency Caller ID for individual users or devices for clients who do not wish to apply it on a Domain Site wide level.
-
Navigate to either a user’s profile or a specific device and under theEmergency Caller ID dropdown select the Call Back Number created in the previous step. Here is an example of setting in a user’s profile page
- Click Save.
Define Emergency 911 (e911) Addresses #
The location can be set not only on individual users, but on Domains, Sites and Devices. When more than one address has been defined, the precedence will cascade form Domain to Siteto User to Device in that order.
Defining your Addresses #
The best practice for defining your addresses is to follow this flow:
- Create a Domain wide address that encompasses the whole organization at the geographical location.
- Add Sites as needed, if they are at different geographical locations.
- Prompt users to further add granularity by adding any additional or updated location info.
There are slightly separate ways to add addresses depending on if the domain was created before or after the e911 feature was activated.
Adding Enhanced 911 to a New Domain: #
The location can be set on Domains, Sites and Devices. When more than one address has been defined, the precedence will cascade form Domain to Site to User to Device in that order.
Add Domain #
When adding a domain, there will be a new Emergency tab where the user will input the 911 Caller ID and create an emergency address.
- Log into the Portal.
- Navigate to Domains.
- Click the Add Domain button
- Navigate to the Emergency tab:
- You will need to fill out all of the fields on this tab to validate this address with your 3rd party vendor. When finished, click Add.
Adding Enhanced 911 to an Existing Domain: #
It is best practice to set at least a domain default emergency address for any existing domains.
Edit Domain #
Follow these steps to add >e911 domain established before the feature was activated:
- As an Office Manager scope or above, navigate to the you want to edit.
- Click on Edit Domainon the top blue menu bar, bringing up the Edit Domain modal.
- Navigate to the Emergency tab:
Because this is a that was created prior to the introduction of the>E911
- SelectAdd a new addressoption in theEmergency Addressdropdown. The modal should look like:
- From here, enter an appropriate emergency address and press Validate. This will send the address to the 3rd party vendor and validate whether it is a formatted address.
- After validating, you should be able to press the Save button to complete the domain update.
Any users that do not already have an Emergency Address selected will have the value defaulted to this new value. Such as this sample user in the domain::
Upon login this user will see a popup that will prompt them to either set a unique emergency location, or confirm that the default is appropriate.
